Крупнейшая в мире профессиональная организация, объединяющая научных работников и студентов, занимающихся изучением биологических и культурных аспектов происхождения человека. Ведет научно-исследовательскую деятельность. Около 10 тыс. членов. В числе изданий ежеквартальники "Американ антрополоджист" [American Anthropologist], "Американ этнолоджист" [American Ethnologist], "Антрополоджи энд эдьюкейшн куортерли" [Anthropology and Education Quarterly], "Антрополоджи ньюс" [Anthropology News] и др. Основана в 1902. Штаб-квартира в г. Арлингтоне, шт. Вирджиния.
